本书以《大学英语教学指南(2020版)》为依据, 以“培养德才兼备、具有创新意识与国际视野的应用型专业人才”为理念, 以“丰富工程英语教材体系”为宗旨, 为满足当前工程英语专业人才培养需要编写而成。
本书属于大学专门用途英语教材, 共由6章和2个附录组成。本书涉及多个工程学科, 详细介绍了学术英语工程类语篇的语言特点和阅读写作技巧, 旨在训练和培养学生阅读和撰写学术英语工程类文章的能力。本书配备电子教学资源, 且每一章均设置了思维导图和阅读技能讲解, 适用于非英语专业英语课程教学。

本书力图体现以下特色:
1. 技能融入, 内容实用
本书基于牛津大学出版社出版的教师培训用书English for Academic Purposes中提出的通用学术英语技能要素, 结合应用型本科院校学生工程英语学习的实际情况, 在深入综合分析的基础上, 精选了六大核心技能, 并将这些技能按照由易到难、从低阶能力到高阶能力发展的原则融入书中的6个主题单元中。编者根据每项技能的内容和教学需求进行整体设计, 以模块的形式组织与核心技能相关的知识、概念、应用、典型范例(主题相关学术文章), 对阅读文章进行精讲精练, 引导学生循序渐进地建构工程英语知识的核心框架, 培养学生工程英语的读写技能。

本书突破了传统教材以课文为主的知识编排方式, 注重任务驱动型学习方式的重塑。通过一系列相互关联、循序渐进的启发式思维任务实现整个项目的学习过程。任务设计紧扣单元学习目标, 可操作性强, 完成任务即可习得相关技能。每单元均有思维导图, 呈现核心知识点。任务设计与教学目标相呼应, 任务形式丰富多样: 既有限制性任务, 也有开放性任务; 既有学习型任务, 也有自我检测/评价型任务。任务中的典型范例多取自不同学科的学术期刊、学术语料库及学术网站。所有阅读材料除标注相关专业词汇外, 未经任何改编, 以保证素材的可靠性与真实性。
3. 一体设计, 混合教学
本书采用纸质教程、在线教辅与课堂教学三位一体同步设计、整体研发, 支持线上线下混合教学。一体化研发的设计思路是以工程英语阅读能力培养目标为核心, 以教学设计为主导, 以纸质教程为主线和纽带, 链接在线教辅资源与课堂教学, 三者交叉互补、相互配合, 把教材的精华从不同角度、以不同形式、通过不同资源类型呈现给学生。
